Bio
Catherine Smith (b1971) is a Canadian outsider folk artist born in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
She is known for her clay based sculpture work made with her innovative mixed media technique. Through an intensive process of working and re-working she incorporates found objects, collected textiles and painting directly on the surfaces of the objects.
Smith is a keen observer of people, collecting stories and moments from rural life as well as drawing from her life experiences of living across Canada. Creating compelling character studies with complex meanings and nuanced, humourus details, Smith's work evokes a contemporary kinship with artists such as Joe Fafard and Shary Boyle.
Self-taught, Smith's talent emerged later in life after years of isolation and domestic-based trauma.
Her first solo exhibition, 11 Winters, was mounted in Bear River, Nova Scotia in 2023 and she has been working on commissions and a new body of work since.
Smith now splits her time between the east coast and Wakefield, Quebec.
